Replacement Aston Cylinder for Cask Ale Beer Engines
The Aston Cylinder is a replacement cylinder for compatible Aston cask ale handpulls and beer engines. It is available in 1/4-pint and 1/2-pint versions, with a choice of standard or self-contained water-jacketed construction.
Each cylinder includes an energised non-return valve, which helps prevent beer flowing backwards through the dispense line.
Available Cylinder Options
Choose the correct version for your Aston Beer Engine:
- 1/4-pint standard cylinder
- 1/4-pint self-contained water-jacketed cylinder
- 1/2-pint standard cylinder
- 1/2-pint self-contained water-jacketed cylinder
The water-jacketed version keeps the product and cooling circuits separate, helping reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
Check the existing cylinder size and configuration before ordering.
Removing the Existing Cylinder
Drain the beer line and cylinder before starting to reduce product waste and mess.
- Unscrew the pivot points near the base of the frame.
- Remove the dispense tap.
- Unclip the spring pin.
- Free the cylinder and dispense tap from the frame.
- Loosen the jubilee clip securing the connection tube to the top-cap outlet.
- Carefully pull the tube from the outlet.
Keep all reusable washers, clips and seals together during removal.
Fitting the Replacement Cylinder
- Slide the connection tube fully over the cylinder outlet.
- Tighten the jubilee clip to form a secure, airtight connection.
- Align the cylinder clevis with the Aston quadrant.
- Insert the spring clip through the connecting holes.
- Refit the dispense tap and pivot points.
- Tighten the frame bolts securely.
- Keep the pivot points flush with the outside of the frame and avoid overtightening.
Connecting the Beer Line
Fit a correctly sized hose clip over the beer line, push the pipe fully onto the hose tail and secure the clip. Connect the hose tail to the Aston Cylinder, ensuring all washers and seals remain correctly positioned.
Check the complete system for leaks before returning the beer engine to service. Installation should be carried out by someone familiar with cask ale dispense equipment.

WATCH THE ASTON HAND PULL IN ACTION
Check out our video below showing the Aston Hand Pull reaching 500,000 pulls. If you use 2 Firkins (9 gallons) per week on a single beer pump, we estimate this is the equivalent of 16 years usage! The second video shows you how to change the Aston 1/4 pint cylinder in under 5 minutes.
